Last Easter weekend I had some family over and I was stumped for ways to entertain them. We wanted to do something other than the city center and museums. Thankfully, a friend suggested Åre and it turned out to be quite a pleasant day trip.
The Destination: Åre is a beautiful and extremely popular ski resort. The base camp is surrounded by restaurants and hotels. There are several chair lifts and cable cars to take you up the hill. There are plenty of options for skiing depending on your skill level. I saw quite a few little kids so it is suitable for all ages.
I didn’t ski but still had a good time. The trip is worth it even for the faint hearted.
Cost: The cable car ride up costs roughly 120 NOK. You can also rent ski gear for a fee. Parking is free for the first hour.
Duration: The trip will only take a couple of hours. You can easily leave in the morning and be back for dinner.
Scenery: We saw some spectacular snow clad peaks and frozen rivers on the way.
Border Control: There was a border control on the way but we didn’t have to stop.
